Abies grandis (common name: grand fir) is a native tree to lower elevations from Southern British Colombia to Norther California, meaning it can occur around the Puget Sound.

It's a majestic conifer, one of the classic Christmas tree selections, an excellent choice as a garden tree if you have a little space. It will get 100 feet tall in maturity (20 or more years) but does remain somewhat narrow, 20 to 35 feet wide or so.

At Willows End, we are lucky to have inherited one on the property. In 2010, it was only five feet tall, and being deeply shaded out by mature trees around it. In 2014, we took out several large Douglas firs behind it, as well as a horse chestnut and red alder. The resulting flood of sunshine has led it to explode to 40 feet high as of 2025 (about four feet per year for the ten years).
